I’ve been using the DJI Osmo pocket for more than one year, and it’s my favorite camera for vlogging. I would like to share my long-term experiences with the Osmo pocket and help you decide whether it is worth buying in 2022 for your travel vlogs.
Suppose you are not familiar with the DJI Osmo pocket. In that case, it is a relatively large 2.3-inch sensor and 26-millimeter full-frame equivalent lens mounted on a tiny gimbal with a handle and small display. It shoots beautiful video up to 4k 60p with very nice Stills, bringing the gimbal stabilization to the next level.
3-Axis Stabilization:
The 3-axis stabilization is often the main thing that sets apart amateur-looking footage from Class C or even professionally-looking footage from some smartphones or vlogging action cameras.
One of the best things about the Osmo pocket gimbal is that there is no setup and balancing procedure required, you can press the on button, and it is ready in three seconds.
The Osmo Pocket is all about size, performance, and stability. It is indeed the first gimbal that fits into your pocket, which means I could take it everywhere with me. It has a 26-millimeter full-frame equivalent lens, so the field of view is wide but not ultra-wide, and I think it is a good choice small camera for vloggers.
Wide-Angle Features :
Some vloggers like to shoot a wide field of view, and fortunately, there is such an option with freewell wide-angle lens it changes the focal length from 26 to about 16 millimeters. That’s definability makes a huge difference, as you can see in the below photo.
I have to say that the sharpness is excellent for what it is and even the corners look very good it is very light-weight and the installation is effortless! You just need to power “on” the Osmo pocket, place it on the lens, and the magnets will hold it securely in place. It is, in my opinion, a perfect lens. It increases the versatility of a small pocket. The image quality has exceeded my expectations, so I recommend it. Check the latest price for Freewell wide-angle lens from here.
Pocket Osmo Video Quality For Vlogging :
The video quality with the Osmo pocket is excellent. That was the biggest surprise for me when I bought it, and the updates further improved it.
it is 4k up to 60 P and up to 100 megabits per second. It uses one over the 2.3-inch sensor, which is more significant than most smartphones. It is also still the most detailed video out of any pocket device.
The lens is an f 3.0 aperture which is pretty bright, and the low-light performance in the video is the best out of all pocket devices.
We can’t expect it to provide professional-grade footage in low lights, but it is sufficient to capture what’s happening around you and share that in your vlogs, especially if viewed on smaller screens. The video from the Osmo pocket beats most the compact cameras such as PowerShot G7X Mark II in terms of the details.
Auto-Focus & Face Detection While vLogging :
The most significant improvement on the Osmo pocket is the autofocus. The face detection points on the sensor were enabled in firmware 1.0, but the significant change came with firmware 1.09.
Since then, the auto-focus has been as good as with the iPhone 13 pro, so it is speedy and 100% accurate overall big thumbs up for the autofocus feature.
Object Tracking Feature For Shooting Cinematics :
On the other hand, the object tracking function was always great in face detection, and it’s hundred percent reliable. Also, it will keep your face in the center of the frame while vlogging other objects that can be focused by tapping on the screen, and that can be adjusted as well. This is also one of the standout features of the Osmo Pocket.
Easy To Operate While Vlogging :
Regarding the handling, the operation is relatively easy. It is just two buttons and a small screen, but you can still set everything on that screen.
User-Friendly Interface For Beginners vLoggers :
The user interface is probably as good as it can be with that small 1.08-inch screen, it is still okay for composing and changing the settings, but if you want to set manual exposure, I recommend connecting it to your smartphone. That works great with the mimo app.
There are other unique features such as motion lapses where you can set up four waypoints where the camera will move during the time-lapse.
Dji Expansion Kit (Best vLogging Kit For Pocket Osmo) :
The most important accessory is the expansion kit from DJI, including the controller wheel Wi-Fi adapter, GoPro mount, and SD card. Especially the control wheel is a must-have, in my opinion. You can check it out here.
To sum up, I can say that I enjoyed using the Osmo pocket for vlogging over the last year. It is great to have one in my pocket whenever I travel, so I can quickly shoot vlogs anytime. It is not outdated in any way. Just the opposite, it is a much better camera than it was a year ago
with a lower price. This is a great time to get one if you want to buy the best vlogging camera for under 300$. Check DJI Osmo Pocket’s latest price here.
